Objective The overall objective of the PREVENT project is to make local communities in Ghana 'AIDS competent', i.e., making them capable of handling the growing challenges from the spread of AIDS. Specifically, the project organizes people living with HIV and AIDS in a strengthened national organization that can protect their rights (NAP+). As an innovative aspect, the project stimulates collaboration between the organization of HIV positive people and Ghana's traditional authorities, i.e., chiefs and queen mothers, to lead community efforts against HIV/AIDS. An important objective is to prevent and reduce stigmatization of the people who suffer from the disease.
Target group The primary target group of the project is the app. 54,000 inhabitants of 36 local communities supported by the project. It focuses on the about 3,900 HIV positive people in three regions (see area). The project works with about 60 chiefs and queen mothers from the 36 communities.
Activities The PREVENT project conducts trainings for organizational leaders of NAP+ and traditional authorities. Communities develop their own action plans for how they can meet the challenges from AIDS under the leadership of local chiefs. The project also enables community-based organizations to seek funding for their projects from external donors. Finally, the project supports community groups in accessing the public funds set aside for addressing HIV/AIDS by the District Assemblies.
Area The project works in three of Ghana's regions: Ashanti, Brong Ahafo and Western Region. 36 communities have been selected in six different districts (Bekwai Municipal, Ejura-Sekyedumase, Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai, Sefwi Wiawso, Techiman Municipal and Tain).
Duration and budget PREVENT started in July 2008 and ended in 2010. The budget was 4.5 million Danish kroner from Danida's facility for innovative HIV/AIDS projects.
Partners CARE is implementing the project in collaboration with two Ghanaian organizations. The Centre for Indigenous Knowledge and Organisational Development (CIKOD) is responsible for working with traditional authorities. The National Association of Positive People (NAP+) is the national or organization for HIV positive people in Ghana.
