Although Mozambique's economy is improving, the country is still one of the poorest in the world following prolonged civil war and frequent natural disasters.

2009 was no exeception with both drought and floods early in the year, although the extent of both was limited compared with previous natural disasters in the country.

Existing problems were compounded by a major outbreak of cholera, while migrants and refugees from crisis-torn Zimbabwe put pressure on the labour market and created social unrest. At the elections at the end of the year, the governing FRELIMO party won 75 per cent of the votes, confirming Mozambique's situation as a de facto single-party state.
