COCISO

Local community organizations in the fight against HIV/AIDS

Purpose

The COCISO project (Comprehensive Civil Society Responses to HIV/AIDS) has the purpose of giving orphans, vulnerable children and HIV/AIDS affected people access to better prevention, care and support. The HIV/AIDS epidemic is extremely destructive in small communities and important needs in relation to health care, information, psychosocial support and basic daily needs are not being covered. Even if the communities are extremely poor and have poorly functioning public social and health care systems, resources - albeit limited - are available in the local communities and within its institutions.

Target group
Orphans, vulnerable children and HIV/AIDS affected.

Activities

The project's overall strategy is to strengthen the capacity of eight community organizations to provide support and care for the people, which are most severely affected. The grass roots organizations fulfill an important role together with the local authorities in fighting discrimination against HIV/AIDS affected and their families. The project strengthens the organizations ability to care for the needs of the most vulnerable groups. In addition to capacity building, the organizations receive small donations to carry out speciel activities for the vulnerable groups.

Area

Activities take place in Vilankulos and Mabote districts in Inhambane Province, which is Mozambique's poorest province.

Duration and budget
The COCISO-project was carried out from the beginning of 2007 and ended in 2009. The total budget was approximately six million kroner, which was funded by Danidas fund for NGO HIV/AIDS-projects.
