Janseep

JANSEEP stands for Janajatis Social and Economic Empowerment Project. Janajatis are ethnic minority groups in Nepal who have experienced severe discrimination and exploitation during the last 200 years, mainly due to government policy. Today they constitute 38 per cent of the population in Nepal. JANSEEP aims to reduce poverty among the Janajatis by empowering and strengthening three ethnic minority groups in Dhanusha and Dolakha districts and protecting and promoting their basic rights.

 

Target group

The project works with 3280 poor households, who depend on natural resources for their survival.

 

Activities
JANSEEP aims to improve political, economic, social and cultural conditions for the target group through workshops, training and information sharing about basic rights and legislation. At the same time the project identifies economic possibilities through savings and loan groups, income generating activities and education for the target group, especially women and young poeople and strengthens people's capacity to undertake these activities. Lastly the project also aims to improve the target groups access to health care, education and natural resources.

Duration and budget

The project runs from 2007 to 2012 with a total budget of one million Euro financed by the EU, Danida and CARE Danmark.

The project is implemneted in collaboration with the local organisation NEFIN - Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities.
