Poor governance, extended droughts and weak civil society are all contributory factors in Niger’s status as one of the poorest countries in the world. CARE Danmark is working to promote human rights for marginalised communities in Niger and to ensure access to schooling in the desert, access to water and various sources of income and food in periods of extreme hardship. This is achieved by means of savings and lending groups, cereal banks and livestock-keeping.
CARE Danmark has five projects in Niger:
PROGRES – focusing on and combating the causes of extreme poverty.
CHILDREN OF THE DESERT – schooling for 1,800 girls and boys and evening classes for their parents.
APCAN – strengthening the national food security monitoring system.
WELLS OF PEACE – establishment and local administration of vital wells.
PARDESA – strengthening capacity for survival through savings and lending groups, livestock keeping and the establishment of cereal banks.
