Much of Tanzania's forests have succumbed to short-term economic interests, which have benefited neither the poor people nor the natural environment. Forestdwelling communities are among the poorest in Tanzania. They are marginalised and weakly represented in society.
CARE Danmark in Tanzania CARE Danmark has one programme in Tanzania, which is striving to preserve the region's forests and natural areas and to improve the living conditions of poor and vulnerable people. This is done by companies paying poor people to take better care of the environment.
In 2009, the programme had great success in assisting poor farmers to integrate their farming with forestry and in building terraces to protect watercourses and prevent erosion. This has resulted in improved water quality and increased agricultural production for the benefit of both the natural environment and the human lives it sustains.
