Objective The purpose of the Eccode project (Son La Women's Economic Collaboration for Development) is to contribute to poverty reduction for the rural population of Thai Nguyen province by ensuring access to economic resources and influence over decisions that affect their lives. The project will help overcome the deep poverty that characterizes large parts of northern Vietnam through a market-driven and group-based strategy to address poverty in the communities. By enabling poor rural women and men to form their own group-based businesses, income can be raised sustainably through various productive activities rather than direct donations. The project will pilot an approach for supporting the establishing and operation of different forms of collaborative business arrangements among farmers and other rural residents. Experiences from the project will result in improved capacity of the local agencies for a more business-oriented and market-based approach to development activities.
Target group and area
The primary target groups are women and men of working age and their dependents in eight communes in Dinh Hoa district. The project is anticipated to directly benefit 2,000 households (approximately 12,000 people). The project will indirectly benefit a much larger number of people estimated at 250,000 through replication of project activities, promotion of economic group formation, improved quality of agricultural extension services, policy change regarding groups and cooperatives, etc.
