Ref. Nepal Internship 2010-2
Country: Nepal
Project:
Support to Village Savings and Loans Associations in Syangja and Doti.
Task:
Study CARE supported Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLA) and other credit and savings groups in the project area to map and assess:
• The use of loans • Saving habits • Effects on women's empowerment and poverty reduction • Intergroup dynamics (mixed gender/cast groups as compared to more homogenous groups) • Compare groups which have received external support to those with internal resource mobilization only
Analyze and present data to CARE Nepal and CARE Denmark and contribute to the final evaluation of the VSLA projects. Give recommendations for what works and what doesn't work in community based microfinance in the Nepali context.
Background: CARE is supporting Village Savings and Loans Associations world-wide (see vsla.net for information about the method), and the method is widely known and famous for offering a pro-poor community based approach to microfinance in developing countries. While CARE has been working with credit and savings groups in Nepal for a number of years, the systematic testing of the VSLA approach in the Nepali context is relatively new. For the past two years, CARE and partners have been supporting VSLA groups in two districts of Nepal. The lessons learned from this project will inform CARE and partners on how to work with community based microfinance and the VSLA model in Nepal in the future.
